Hope (Poem)

Hope is the thing that comes in the night

And clutches your chest, sets your heart alight

It positions you neatly between heaven and hell

And imprisons your mind in a torturous cell

Hope is a triumph and tragedy in one

It dares you to dream before coming undone

It pushes you close to that edge called desire

Do you take the risk and jump off the wire?

We calculate, evaluate and look at past sins

Does everything count from when life begins?

Are we being punished for some wrongdoing?

Or are we just unlucky, the short straw pursuing

Hope is the beast that awakens your senses

The hands almost touching, breaking down your defences

The ever-near scent of your greatest want

To never succeed will forever haunt.
